Geschichte wiederholt sich nicht, weil Institutionen unfähig wären zu lernen, sondern weil menschliches Verhalten bemerkenswert stabil ist.

Geld ist nichts anderes als ein Spiegel dieser Konstante.

Über Jahrzehnte hinweg galt der Goldstandard als Inbegriff monetärer Vernunft. Er versprach Ordnung, Disziplin und Berechenbarkeit. Geld, so die Überzeugung, müsse an etwas gebunden sein, das nicht beliebig vermehrt werden könne. Gold erfüllte diese Anforderung wie kein anderes Gut. Es war selten, schwer zu fördern und weltweit begehrt. Damit schien es der ideale Anker für Währungen zu sein – objektiv, neutral und jenseits politischer Willkür.

Gerade diese Eigenschaften machten den Goldstandard jedoch zugleich stabil und gefährlich.
