**Der umstrittene Wahlausschluss von AfD-Kandidaten**

Was derzeit in Niedersachsen geschieht, sollte jeden Demokraten alarmieren – unabhängig davon, wie man zur AfD steht. Mehrere Kandidaten der Partei wurden von den Kommunalwahlen ausgeschlossen. Möglich macht dies eine erst im April 2026 beschlossene Änderung des niedersächsischen Kommunalwahlrechts. Bei tatsächlichen Anhaltspunkten für Zweifel an der Verfassungstreue kann nun die Kommunalaufsicht eingeschaltet werden. Sie darf eigene Erkenntnisse erheben und den Verfassungsschutz um Auskunft bitten. Am Ende entscheidet allerdings der örtliche Wahlausschuss über die Zulassung.

Damit wird eine Frage von erheblicher demokratischer Tragweite aufgeworfen: Wer entscheidet eigentlich darüber, wer überhaupt auf dem Stimmzettel stehen darf?
